Living in La Plata
Amtrak Depot
The Santa Fe Railroad was built through La Plata in 1887, with the 1st passenger train coming through on January 7, 1888. The Depot building was erected at the same time. In 1945 the building caught on fire, and a large part of it was destroyed. The Depot was remodeled at that time into a late Art Deco style that sill remains. The original building is still there, sandwiched between the newly remodeled inside and outside. Over the years the station fell on hard times and neglect, and by 1996 was slated for demolition.
Thanks to the NEMO Model Railroad Club and the Friends For La Plata Preservation, donated labor and materials and later grants were acquired to completely remodel the depot building, with an Open House being held on December 1, 2001. FLPP continues to get grants for upkeep on the station as needed.
The La Plata Amtrak Depot is one of only two passenger stops in Missouri.
